Making $40,000 A Month With Copywriting

Hey, it’s Alex.

If you’re anything like me a couple of months ago, you’re probably asking yourself “What even is copywriting“.

I had never even heard about it until recently, and then out of nowhere, I felt like people were mentioning it constantly. On Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, Everywhere.

At first, I didn’t pay attention to it. But what really made my ears perk up, was hearing people say they make $40,000 A Month utilizing it.

So Here’s what we are going over today:

  • ✍️ What is Copywriting?

  • 🧍‍♂️ People Who Have Made Thousands Using it

  • 🫵 How You Can You Do Something Similar?

What is Copywriting:

To put it simply, copywriting is the act of writing “copy“ that tries to sell someone something.

Another easy way to describe this is “Writing Marketing Material For Businesses“.

Let me give you an example..

It’s a random Tuesday morning. You’re scrolling through your Instagram feed. When you get an ad for some shoes that you have been eyeing.

You go on the website to check them out, and while you’re there you see a pop-up that says something like “Get 20% off“, and then it asks for your email.

You put in your email and keep looking at the shoes. But you get busy and leave the website.

A few days later, you check out your email, and you see 2-3 different emails from the company saying something like…

That right there is called email copywriting, which is one of the most popular forms of copywriting.

Most large companies have teams of people employed to do this for them, but smaller companies don’t.

They don’t want to have to pay a $3,500 a month salary plus benefits to multiple people to get this done. So they generally just collect the emails but don’t utilize them as much as they should.

This is where you come in…

If you can find these companies, you can position yourself as a freelancer that they can hire for say $1-3k a month to write this copy for them.

And your job would be to simply write this copy for them once or twice a week, taking you an hour or two. Making you a couple grand a month without having to spend too much time on this job

And what do you do with all that extra time? You find more clients. And more clients. And more clients. Until you have 10-15 companies all paying you a couple thousand dollars for a couple of hours of your time a week.

And it doesn’t stop at email, companies need copy for their…

  • Websites

  • Ads

  • Messaging

And probably more things that I can’t think of right now.

And there’s a reason they are willing to pay you a couple thousand a week, with good copy and emails, that investment gives them great returns. Email is one of the most consistent forms of extra income. So it makes sense to pay $2,000 a month to make an extra $8,000.

Here Are A Couple People Who Have Made Thousands Using it:

(To be fair, these people probably have some kind of program or course to sell, I haven’t taken any, and I have no clue if they are good or not. Anyone can claim anything on the internet so proceed with caution)

@CardinalMason:

This is one of the first people I saw talking about Copywriting. Seems like a pretty cool guy to me.

He claims at his peak he was making $40,000 a month from copywriting. Since then I think he has started to scale into more of an agency model where he trains copywriters and finds clients that need copywriters.

But he says he still writes for a couple of his first copywriting clients. One of which pays him $750 a week to write an email that takes him an hour to do.

@BenBader:

From the research I’ve done, Ben seems more like an info product guy.

Courses are a very nuanced topic, but there’s no denying they offer great margins because a course can be created once and given out infinitely.

Ben saw that so he knew selling info products would be much more high ticket and better paying than anything else. From his claims, he is also making anywhere from $30-100k a month from this.

@CopywritingDad:

From what I’ve gathered, Copywriting Dad seems to be an OG in the space. He’s followed by a lot of other successful copywriters and claims to have made over $120,000 a month.

From my research, he seems to be a lot more of a “Motivation“ guy but could still be worth looking into.

How You Can You Do Something Similar:

there are obviously a ton of different avenues you can take with this. But if I was trying to start copywriting from zero experience, this is what I would do.

1) The first step would be learning everything.

An easy way to do this would be to subscribe to the email list of as many companies as you can find and then study the emails you get. Find similarities between different emails and start making a little “portfolio” of test emails to show your stuff.

I’ve also heard the book “cashvertising” is a great place to start. (You can find a free pdf version of it on Google).

If you’d like, some other options would be to buy a course on this topic to get a full breakdown of the business model or find a job copywriting for a larger company.

2) Second, Outreach Outreach, Outreach.

I don’t care how you do it, whether you reach out to companies or people on Instagram, or cold email every CMO you see.

Reach out to everyone you can find because if you reach out to 1000 people, there is almost no chance that no one would be interested.

3) Once you find your client. Keep them happy.

  • Ask them for data on that last email you sent out.

  • Tweak the emails to be better converting based on that data.

  • Keep learning and getting better at your skills.

  • Check-in with the client regularly so they know they are being taken care of.

Do everything in your power to keep them as a client because it is much less headache long term to retain a client than it is to find a new one.

And there you have it. That’s how I would start a copywriting business.
